A heat wave is hitting Brazil and the alert system has recorded a "thermal sensation" absolutely new.

This is a new sign of observed climate change. This time, it is in Rio de Janeiro, although accustomed to heat waves, that a new record has just been broken: the Alerta Rio system, which measures the degree of thermal sensation' ;quot;, mixing temperature and humidity data, recorded a new record of 60.1 °C, Saturday March 16.

This is neither more nor less than the highest level ever reached since these measurements began in 2014. The previous record dated from November 2023, when the temperature felt reached 59.7 °C .

The mercury goes above 40° C this Sunday

According to the National Institute of Meteorology of Brazil (Inmet), reported by CNN Brazil, temperatures in the Rio region are 5 °C above seasonal norms. The city of Cariocas, populated by 6.5 million inhabitants, was placed on yellow alert on Friday as temperatures exceeded 40 °C this Sunday.

Enough to worry the hydrogeologist Emma Haziza who responds ironically to the followers of the conspiracy theory: "Above all, let's not change anything, technology will come to us save".

Other regions of Brazil are affected

Brazilian meteorologists are just as worried and point out that this season is traditionally one of the hottest of the year in the Rio region, particularly due to the lack of rain.  The authorities are calling on the population to protect themselves from sunburn and apply sunscreen regularly and to hydrate well.

Temperatures should however start to drop from Monday, but will remain particularly high, above 37 °C. Other regions are affected by this heat wave, particularly in São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Paraná, or even the state of Goiás or Mato Grosso do Sul. Everywhere temperatures are above 35°C.
