Dashed hopes… The heavy rainfall which fell on Wednesday and Thursday in the Thau basin (around 100mm in 24 hours) was not enough to put an end to the inversac phenomenon, triggered on October 17, 2023, causing an entry of ;rsquo;salt water in the water table, via the Vise source.

A rainfall deficit still too significant

Deepened since 2018 and even more so by an exceptionally dry year in 2023, the rainfall deficit was in fact too significant for this single rainy episode to be enough. "We were at low rainfall records and even if our sensors react a little, it will not be enough to counter the reversal: 220 liters of salt water per second are still introduced into the water. the aquifer. The deficit is such that two or three other events like this would be needed, explains Ludovic Cesmat, project manager in hydraulics and environmental management at the Syndicat Mixte du Bassin de Thau (SMBT).< /p>

On March 14, 2022, the pressures were reversed thanks to 200 millimeters of water falling in 24 hours, ending seventeen months of reversal. If the latest precipitation did a lot of good by recharging the soil, it was not significant enough to put an end to the current one. Not this time…
