CASE. Bike prices have increased an average of 71% since the pandemic

On compte, dans les foyers français, en moyenne 1,28 vélo.

C’est ce que révèle l’Observatoire du vélo 2023, édité par l’Union Sport & Cycles. L’an dernier, le prix moyen était de 978 euros.

We must see here the craze effect, which should undoubtedly be coupled with the increase in the prices of raw materials observed since the end of the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the latest Cycle Observatory, published by the Union Sport & Cycles, which analyzes the bicycle market in 2019, prices have increased again.

Last year, the average price of a bicycle was 978 euros. This is 7% more than in 2022 (916 euros), but, above all, 71% more than in 2019, a year often taken as a reference, which precedes the pandemic. This increase in prices, which continues, is due, according to the USC, to four reasons, which combine.

1.28 bicycles on average per household

The first is "the growth of road/gravel bikes". The second is the consequence of a "decline in children's bicycles". The third is linked to "the’impact of the VAE", the electrically assisted bicycle. Finally, the fourth is the result of inflation.

According to the study carried out by the Ministry of Transport, on cycling in France in 2013, there were, on average, 1.28 bicycles in each French household. Which gives an average of 0.46 bicycles per person. Classic bikes representing an average of 0.81, children's bikes 0.35 and electric bikes 0.12.
