Les origines

3×3 is a variation of five-a-side basketball, born on the street at the end of the 1980s in the wake of streetball, then booming. It was only at the end of the 2000s that rules began to be formalized, within the framework of competitions in the United States, before the International Federation (Fiba) established its own , in 2007.

The Trials

Two events: a men's tournament, a women's tournament

In 3×3 basketball, two teams of three players (plus a substitute) compete outdoors on a half court 15m long by 11m wide wide, with the aim of sending the ball into a basket attached to a circle 45 cm in diameter located 3.05 m from the ground and attached to a panel. Both teams use a single basket.

Shots are worth one point for free throws (the player is then alone in front of the basket, without opposition) and those registered in the current game, if the player is placed inside a line placed at 6 .75 m from the circle. Shots scored outside this line score two points.

To win the match, the team must reach 21 points or be in the lead after a 10-minute period. Overtime is played if the score is tied at the end of regulation time, the first team to score two points wins the match.

Monday 5 août :semi-finals, finals and bronze medal matches for men and women

The competition site

The 3×3 basketball events take place in the center of the French capital, Place de la Concorde. This square was notably the scene of the execution of King Louis XVI during the French Revolution.

The competition

Format:the 8 teams are brought together in a single group, each meeting the other seven. At the end of this first round, a direct elimination phase begins: the first two teams advance directly to the semi-finals, where they will meet the winners of the play-offs between those ranked between 3rd and 6th place.

Number of teams: eight for the men's tournament and eight for the women's tournament

Men: Serbia, USA, Lithuania, China, Netherlands, France, Latvia, Poland

Women: China, USA, France, Germany, Canada, Spain, Azerbaijan, Australia

Serbia set

Dominant nation in the men's discipline, Serbia settled for bronze in Tokyo. Winner of five of the six World Cups since 2016 and five-time reigning European champion, she counts in her ranks the one considered the best player in the world, Strahinja Stojacic.

Recognizable by his retro mustache, "Dr Strange" (his nickname) has also won the world circuit in the last two years with his club Ub bringing together the bulk of the Serbian selection.

The United States, which failed to qualify for the men's race in Tokyo, will be in Paris.
