A British association is trying to combat illegal broadcasts of sports matches through a platform encouraging anonymous reporting of fraudsters.

While the broadcasting of Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 in France is controversial, particularly the prices offered by DAZN, more and more people are turning to illegal streaming. The opening match of the first day of Ligue 1 between PSG and Le Havre, for example, brought together more than 200,000 people on illegal streaming platforms such as the social network Telegram or via IPTV.

Anonymous denunciations could lead to legal proceedings

To combat this “scourge”, French channels could imitate what is being done in the United Kingdom. An association called “Crimestoppers” encourages users to report people who use IPTV or go to illegal streaming websites.

This reporting would be done anonymously according to Crimestoppers and would then lead to potential legal proceedings. The British association announces that the implementation of this “campaign” on Instagram and Facebook will last for approximately six weeks.

The primary objective of the campaign “is to gather intelligence on individuals and groups involved in advertising or selling illegal streaming subscriptions,” , Crimestoppers' statement reads. The association specifies that there will be no remuneration for whistleblowers.
