The Qualiviande agricultural competition, organized by the organizing committee for livestock events in Lozère, is celebrating its eighth edition this weekend of Saturday August 31 and Sunday September 1, 2024. Three breed unions, 27 breeders, three judges and more than 200 animals gathered together.

On the occasion of the 8th edition of the Qualiviande departmental agricultural competition, organized by the organizing committee for livestock events in Lozère (Comel), 27 sheep and cattle breeders gathered at the large hall of Aumont-Aubrac (in Peyre-en-Aubrac, a new commune). “The goal is to bring together cattle and sheep breeders from Lozère in order to share a good time together", explains Quentin Boyer, Comel facilitator.

88 Limousin cattle, 33 Charolais cattle and 100 sheep

In total, three breeds of animals took part in the competition. "There are 88 Limousin cattle, 33 Charolais cattle and nearly 100 sheep, white ones from the Massif Central", explains the person in charge of the facilitator. It is under the eye of about fifty people and a precise judge, who changes depending on the breed, that the breeders present their beast. The 221 animals are evaluated and classified according to multiple criteria.

“We judge the animal on its morphology, its muscular and skeletal development, as well as its rounded rump", lists Florian Chambon, judge of Charolais cattle. For this purpose, when the animals are in the “arena", breeders brush their cattle or sheep so that their rear end is highlighted, impeccable and silky.

The judge classifies the animals live and moves the animals in the order of his choice.

Continuation of the activities this Sunday

This Saturday, August 31, the animals participated in the competition according to their age and breed. “Sunday morning, at 10am, we will sort them by section to determine the champions”, adds Quentin Boyer. At 11am, the children will parade accompanied by their cow and from 2pm, the prizes will be awarded to the various winners of the weekend.
