'Their debts crushed them': 6-year-old girl abandoned by her parents found by monastery nuns

In Poland, a 6-year-old girl was found in a baby box by nuns at the Franciscan monastery in Warsaw at the end of August.

At the end of August, nuns at the Franciscan monastery in Warsaw discovered a little girl, Eliza, alone and abandoned. After questioning her, they quickly realized that the child had been left there by her parents. The nuns then contacted the police to report their discovery, reports La Libre.

Eliza's father allegedly took her to Warsaw, about 50 kilometres from their home, under the pretext of returning to pick her up later. But he eventually fled, leaving the child behind. Eliza's mother, for her part, was apparently aware of this abandonment.

Heavy financial problems

The parents then fled to the Netherlands, due to their financial problems. “They had a lot of debts, took out instant loans. Their debts crushed them”, relatives testify. The father had even been imprisoned for a month for non-payment of alimony.

"We don't do that kind of thing. A loving mother seeks help when in trouble, and does not simply abandon the child she carried for nine months”, reacted close friends of the family, shocked by this abandonment.

When they went to the parents' home, the police were confronted with a heartbreaking scene: several garbage bags containing the little girl's toys and clothes were piled up in front of the door, a sign of a hasty departure.

After this abandonment, Eliza was placed in a children's home in Warsaw. A Polish court will now have to decide on her future and the foster family she will be placed with.
