Lors de la passation de pouvoirs ce 22 septembre 2024, le remplaçant de Bruno Le Maire a déclaré vouloir un salaire "décent" pour tous les Français qui travaillent.

During the transfer of power on September 22, Antoine Armand, the new Minister of Economy and Finance, declared that he wanted to implement a "decent wage" for all French people who work.

"For all French people who work"

Antoine Armand has already mentioned this "decent wage" during the weekend in an interview with the Journal du Dimanche (JDD). Bruno Le Maire's replacement wants to "start parliamentary work on the "decent wage", an idea implemented by the Michelin group".

“Our job in this world is to make things easier for businesses […], to ensure that all working French people have a decent salary", declared the former president of the Economic Affairs Commission.

On September 18, Antoine Armand also spoke with the CEO of the Michelin group, who implemented this system in his company on January 1 2024.

An idea that is not new

This idea of a “decent wage” is not new, on the contrary. The International Labour Organization (ILO) has been trying for several years to reach a consensus on the definition of a decent wage, also called a “living wage”.

The latter”corresponds to the”level of wage necessary to ensure a decent standard of living for workers and their families, taking into account the circumstances of the country and calculated for work performed during normal working hours”, according to”the ILO.

The “living wage” according to Michelin

At Michelin, the definition varies a little and corresponds to the level of salary (staff) allowing to "support a family of four, to cover daily needs (food, housing, health, clothing, transport, education) but also to build up a small precautionary savings", explained the group's CEO, Florent Menegaux, who added that the salary "includes only fixed elements of compensation without variable bonuses and social benefits".

In fact, this level The wage rate varies by region. The “living wage” in Paris is equivalent to twice the minimum wage, while in Clermont Ferrand it is only 20% above the minimum wage.
