Pensions, public services, purchasing power: a strike and demonstrations announced in Gard on Tuesday October 1

There is no shortage of demands on this first day of the budget vote in the National Assembly. In the Gard, several demonstrations will take place in Nîmes, Alès, Le Vigan and Uzès.

On Tuesday, October 1st, as everywhere in France, several demonstrations will be organized in towns in the Gard to demand the repeal of the pension reform, strong measures for purchasing power (increase in salaries, minimum wage, pensions, gender equality, lowering VAT to 5.5% for basic necessities, freezing energy prices), the financing of public services and the development of industrial employment.

Calls for strikes have been launched by the inter-union (CGT, FO, CFDT, FSU, Unsa and Solidaires) in the public and private sectors. The unions criticize shareholders for taking the lion's share by speculating on commodities. The combined wealth of the 500 richest people in France has increased from 194 billion euros in 2009 to 1,170 billion euros in 2023″, according to the CGT departmental union of Gard.

Budget vote

The date of October 1 was chosen because it is the first day of the budget vote in the National Assembly. The unions indicate in a press release that they expect nothing “from the new government and yet there are huge projects to improve the lives of employees, retirees, young people and students!” During the demonstrations next Tuesday in Nîmes (2:30 p.m., departure from Maison Carrée), Alès (10 a.m., sub-prefecture), Le Vigan (6 p.m., sub-prefecture) and Uzès (10 a.m., town hall), there will also be talk of abandoning the unemployment insurance reform and repealing the pension reform. Strengthening social dialogue is one of the demands.
