'I've struggled with my mental health my whole life': Lewis Hamilton reveals he's been depressed since he was a teenager
|The famous Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton has looked back on several difficult stages of his life, including his fight against depression.
The seven-time F1 world champion gave an interview to the Times. In it, the Briton talks about his youth, which was particularly marked by mental health problems. Lewis Hamilton reveals that he battled depression since childhood, which became the fight of his life.
“I think it's linked to the pressure of motorsport”
The driver who will be behind the wheel of a Ferrari next season, has been involved in the world of motor racing since he was very young, even before he was 10, says L’Équipe. This particularly competitive environment is conducive to pressure and can quickly become anxiety-provoking for many people.
“I've struggled with my mental health throughout my life.”Particularly depression, at a very young age. I must have been about 13. I think it was the pressures of motorsport, the difficulties at school and the bullying. I had no one to talk to.”I also had some very difficult times in my twenties,”, Lewis Hamilton told the Times.
The Mercedes driver has admitted that he has seen psychologists in the past, but none of these consultations have led to any positive progress. “I talked to a woman years ago, but it didn't really help. I'd like to find someone today”, he says.
The 39-year-old Briton explains that he has matured over the years, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic, explaining that meditation has particularly helped him and running too. "You learn from things that your parents have passed on to you, you understand better how you react to things, how you can change it. What could make me angry in the past no longer makes me angry today. I had trouble calming my brain at the beginning. But it's a good way to reconnect with myself, connect with my inner feelings, understand what I can do,” he said.
An eighth title
Lewis Hamilton will ride in his Mercedes six more times before joining the Italian team for next season. After his sixth place at the Singapore Grand Prix, George Russell's teammate hopes to do better on the Austin asphalt, where he was disqualified with Charles Leclerc in 2023 by the FIA technical delegates.
The seven-time world champion remains in search of another title, which he may win next year with a Scuderia. For the time being, Max Verstappen remains the championship leader while Lando Norris' McLaren is getting dangerously close for the final part of the season.
