In Lespignan, the citizen consultation says unequivocally “yes” to the hypermarket which is causing debate

The establishment of an Intermarché in Lespignan is creating discord between the municipality and the traders in the town centre. The population is in favour of the municipality's project. They have expressed themselves on this point.

When writing our article on 23 September 2024 on the creation of a large supermarket in Lespignan, Midi Libre made an error of interpretation. We explained that if necessary, the mayor of Lespignan, Jean-François Guibbert, would organize a citizen consultation.

An unequivocal consultation

It was already carried out in February 2021 and it gives the following results: Number of voters, 1,709 or 65.20%; Votes cast, 1,688 or 98.77%. The number of voters in favor of the opening of a large commercial area in Lespignan was 1,138, or 67.42% of the votes cast. Those who did not want it, for their part, were 550, or 32.58%. A clear result expressed by the population. “This consultation was done by mail with a double envelope to maintain anonymity, on the basis of the electoral list. The counting was carried out on March 15, 2021, at the town hall, by representatives of the association in our presence,” adds the mayor of the town.

Subsequently, Midi Libre discussed the modification of the Local Urban Planning Plan (PLU). For the time being, this modification has not been filed. The municipal council deliberated to launch the study of modifying the PLU. "It seems coherent to us to offer our citizens the possibility of filling up with fuel while doing their shopping in a commercial area. The file is under study and has not yet been filed with the DDTM", Jean-François Guibbert explained on this point.
