Eighth generation of winegrowers, Sébastien Bobinet took over the family estate of Saumur in his early thirties. He and his wife, Emeline Calvez, cultivate their organic vines and vinify without inputs, with a minimum of manipulation.

The name of their cuvée raised my eyebrows – no doubt because of its conservative sound. .. – but I forgave him as soon as I stuck my nose in the glass. The scents of chenin are pure and could not be more typical, between Anjou pear, lanolin, chamomile. The palate is just as crystalline and precise, between white fruits, lemon, flowers and honey.

The texture, although a little less vinous than the average chenin on the market (l effect of the 2021 vintage), does not show any leanness and rather shines with its tension and its vibrant profile. Sold as a Vin de France, Poil de Lièvre comes from Chenin vines aged 25 to 50 years and planted in the clay-limestone soils of Dampierre-sur-Loire, neighboring Saumur to the east. Bottled without SO2.

A treat with oysters, razor clams and other shellfish…Cheers!
