Trois plages ont été fermées ce week-end après qu’un requin d’environ trois mètres a été repéré, terrorisant les baigneurs.

With temperatures already summery in Spain, many tourists and locals went to the beach in the Canaries this weekend. But the tranquility of bathers was disturbed by the presence of a shark lurking around the beaches of Melenara, Salinetas and San Bartolomé de Tirajina, report several local media.

"We turned around and saw a huge fin about 20 centimeters" , says a bather on the channel Televisión Canaria.

The presence of the approximately 3 meter shark led to the immediate evacuation of these three beaches, which remained closed until Monday June 18. According to information from the local Telde police, it could be a hammerhead shark. This species, easily recognizable by its mallet-shaped head, lives in tropical waters and subtropical, like those which bathe the Canary Islands archipelago.

An increasingly common phenomenon

On videos shared on social networks by witnesses of the scene, we can see the shark rushing at full speed towards the shore, towards the frightened visitors coming out of the water .

According to a specialist in marine science interviewed by La Provincia, "it is more and more It is common to see sharks in summer, especially in areas where there are breeding cages and fish".

National Geographic specifies, however, that shark attacks on humans are very rare. Out of more than 500 species, around thirty are likely to attack humans, of which only a dozen are considered dangerous: among them, the great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), the tiger shark ( Galeocerdo cuvier) and the bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas).
