Scientists from Washington University have uncovered the mystery of giant black holes in Antarctica
Strange holes forms a global climate change
During the Antarctic winter, when the temperature drops so low that freezes even the bottom of the ocean, in the interior of Antarctica, scientists noticed a strange formation in the form of massive black holes about the size of Austria.

The mysterious phenomenon was first noticed in 1970 – then these formations were much larger. Again they watched in 2016 and 2017. Almost half a century, scientists could not explain the emergence of these giant holes, called polynyas (from the Russian word “polynya”). Recently in the journal Nature reported the results of a study which revealed another secret of Antarctica.
The area of black holes in Antarctica is comparable with the size of countries like Austria
To uncover a half-century of mystery, scientists from the University of Washington enlisted the support of NASA, using satellites to explore the strange formations in the ice. It turned out that a giant ice voids are formed in the result of coincidence of many factors of the environment. As shown by the results of a study of the cold ocean water beneath the ice is mixed with the warmer currents, raising the “heated” water to the surface, melting the ice.
The cold winters on Earth will be no more scientists
“The water is warm enough to melt sea ice. That’s the whole secret,” explains the study’s lead author and a doctor of philosophy at the University of Washington in physical Oceanography Ethan Campbell.
The most interesting fact was that these formations appear almost immediately. So quickly that the hole on the ice literally appear suddenly. This happens due to the presence of underwater plateau Mod-Rise with a massive seamount located in the vicinity of these holes.
“This mountain is underwater Everest under the ocean. The shape and topography of high mountains increase the movement of warm waters to the surface, creating a strong warm currents forming the likeness of a powerful jet from the hose, wash away the cold ice,” notes Campbell.
The total amount of heat released by this warm water, very large. And the warm currents become “hot” as a result of global warming. Soon the “hole” can become more common and have much larger sizes.
Global warming will change the water color to green
“In consequence of the destruction of the Earth’s climate, like a giant hole in Antarctica will be formed increasingly,” – concludes the author of the study.
We will remind that earlier the future of humanity is threatened suffocation from carbon dioxide as a result of global warming. Environmentalists also spoke about how climate change on Earth in the near future.
