A stroller club is setting up in Sète and intends to combat the isolation of postpartum mothers

Joëlle et Alexandra sont les deux “tatas” qui ont récemment créé l’antenne sétoise. Midi Libre – W. N.

L’association nationale compte 160 antennes en France, en Europe et au Congo.

One after the other, a few mothers, accompanied by their offspring or alone, settle down at a terrace in the city center of Sète. “Welcome, we are Joëlle and Alexandra”, indicate the two women already seated at the table. This lunch is the first meeting organized by the latter, volunteers within the brand new branch of the Sète Stroller Club.

The opportunity, between noon and two, to discuss motherhood and give each other advice. More generally, this is the objective pursued by this national association which fights against the isolation of postpartum mothers (whose children are between 0 and 3 years old) by offering free meetings. In total, 160 clubs exist in France, in about ten European countries and in Congo-Brazzaville.

Benevolence and respect

The idea of creating a Sète branch last June came from these two mothers: Joëlle, who arrived in the spring and was already part of the club in Paris, and Alexandra, a member in Montpellier. “We want to organize walks, but also a lunch and a dinner per month. The goal is for moms to feel safe, to be able to unwind, and for it to be accessible to all budgets,” they explain.

They have also launched a Whatsapp group that already brings together around fifty mothers. They can inform about an available place with a childminder, ask for advice on diversifying their diet or discuss their concerns about waking up in the middle of the night.

“When you have children of the same age, you can quickly have common problems: sleep, relationships, isolation even if you are well surrounded”, say the two aunts (names of the volunteers at the Stroller Club). And to remind that the values of the association are, above all, kindness and respect for parental choices. Asking mothers for advice is not a substitute for medical advice, Joëlle and Alexandra also indicate.

“A real upheaval”

Nizha saw the announcement of the creation of the Stroller Club on social networks. “It's a way to socialize with other mothers but also for children to meet others of the same age. Motherhood is a real upheaval and it can be nice to talk, to advise each other”, confides the Sète native. And Joëlle adds: “They say it takes a village to raise a child. With the club, we recreate this village”.
