A suspicious object in downtown Magog

Several police officers, firefighters and paramedics were dispatched to downtown Magog late Wednesday, after the discovery of an object that could look like an explosive device.
At 5 pm on Wednesday, the Memphremagog Police Board received a call about an object behind 72 Main Street West, Magog. It was a “pop can connected to piles between concrete blocks,” says the police spokesman, Lt. Sylvain Guay.

To avoid any risk, the emergency services proceeded to the evacuation of all the people living within a radius of 100 meters around the machine, unearthed by a resident of the sector. Buildings between 40 and 98 Main Street West were vacated.

Artificers of the SQ

Given the situation they were facing, police officers from the Memphrémagog Police Board asked for help from the Sûreté du Québec. So it was the SQ’s artificers who made sure that the suspect craft would not create any explosions.

The SQ fireworks arrived in Magog around 7:30 pm. “The robot was deployed to approach and control the machine. The findings made then were enough interest for the components of the object to be seized for further analysis by specialists, “says the lieutenant Guay without offering more precision.

While waiting to learn more about the components in question, the investigators of the Police Board of Memphremagog “will meet witnesses and analyze the scene, in order to establish the motivation of the designer (s) of the object. ”

It should be noted that firefighters and ambulance attendants were sent to the city center on a preventive basis. Since a railway line is found behind the 72 Main Street West, the railway company concerned was asked to temporarily cease “all rail traffic”.
