The combination of two natural peptides may become effective to reduce the damage caused by the infections of COVID-19 according to a recent study, canada-united states.

A collaboration between the University of Toronto and the National Jewish Hospital in Denver and made a new discovery that could be useful for fighting against inflammation and respiratory diseases such as COVID-19.

The study was published in Cell Reports, a us scientific journal that covers all fields of biology. It was financed by a grant of the canadian Institutes of health research (CIHR).

Dampen the inflammation

Called TAT CARMIL1, the discovery consists of two natural peptides that, when combined, work together to penetrate the membrane of a cell in order to cushion an acute inflammatory response.

In this first study, the peptide has reduced the degradation of collagen by up to 43 %. If it is deployed early enough, according to the researchers, the peptide might even soothe some of the worst damage caused by acute inflammatory responses.

When the body is overwhelmed by infections such as those caused by the flu, H1N1 or the COVID-19, it can release a flood of cytokines in the body. In these cases, cytokines, anti-infectious, can cause severe damage to the body.

Dr Greg Downey, pulmonologist and co-author of the study, describes the discovery of peptides of”exciting”.

A single precision

The peptide combines a segment of a natural protein, the CARMIL1, with a “vehicle” peptide, TAT, which leads to the CARMIL1 directly in the cell. This allows the CARMIL1 to calm the storm-inflammatory.

The discovery is unique for its precision. “We believe that the unusual nature of this pathway may limit its side effects,” explained Chris McCulloch, professor and co-leader of the study.

“It is a clear path to treat a specific problem,” says Dr. Downey.

The discovery could also one day become an ally useful in the fight against all types of inflammation.
