  • Thomas chabot : 39 stitches (6 dc, 33 d in 71 m)

Recruit to watch

Tim Stützle, center

Main acquisitions

  • Matt Murray, goalie
  • Evgenii Dadonov, winger
  • Alex Galchenyuk, winger
  • Derek Stepan, center
  • Cédric Paquette, winger
  • Erik Gudbranson, defender

Main departures

  • Anthony Duclair, winger
  • Bobbt Ryan, winger
  • Matt Borowiecki, defender
  • Craig Anderson, Guardian

STRENGTHS

The Senators have some very good young prospects. They had one of the best teams in the American League last year with the Belleville Senators. Alex Formentons, Josh Norris, Logan Brown, Drake Batherson and Erik Brannstrom will inject a lot of energy into the team. Chabot is one of the good young defensemen in the NHL. He finished atop the circuit last year with an average playing time of 26 minutes. They acquired a former Stanley Cup champion goaltender in Matt Murray. An improvement over Craig Anderson.

WEAKNESSES

A lack of depth to the blue line. When Nikita Zaitsev and Mike Reilly have a place in the top 4, it’s not a good sign. Stützle will be a good first center in the future, but in the short term the Senators don’t have much ammunition in this crucial position with Derek Stepan, Chris Tierny, Colin White and Artem Anisimov. The Senators allowed 238 goals last year, putting them at 30e rank out of 31 NHL teams.

  • Mitchell marner : 67 stitches (16 dc, 51 d in 59 sts)
  • John tavares : 60 points (26 dc, 34 d in 63 m)

  • Wayne Simmonds, winger
  • Zach Bogosian, defender

Main departures

  • Kasperi Kapanen, winger
  • Tyson Barrie, defenseman
  • Andreas Johnsson, winger
  • Cody This, Defender

STRENGTHS

A formidable attack. Kyle Dubas spends an insane portion of his budget with three forwards over $ 10million in Matthews, Marner and Tavares. William Nylander follows at 6.9 million. The addition of veterans to better supervise the team. Joe Thornton, TJ Brodie and Zach Bogosian will serve as mentors with Jason Spezza returning for another season to his hometown. The Leafs finished at 6e ranked last year in power play at 23.1%.

WEAKNESSES

An unstable number one goalkeeper in Frederik Andersen, capable of the best and the worst. There are still doubts at the blue line. Morgan Rielly will need to bounce back from a tough season where he hasn’t produced at the same pace and injured a foot. There is little depth to the wings.

Winnipeg Jets

  • Mark Scheifele : 73 points (29 dc, 44 d in 71 m)
  • Blake wheeler : 65 points (22 dc, 43 d in 71 m)

Recruit to watch

Main acquisitions

  • Paul Stastny, center
  • Nate Thompson, center
  • Derek Forbort, defender

Main departures

  • Cody Eakin, center
  • Dmitry Kulikov, defender
  • Nicholas Shore, center

STRENGTHS

The Jets have big forwards, but they’re also fast and talented. Connor Hellebuyck, the winner of the Vézina Trophy last year. Five over 20 goal scorers in Connor, Scheifele, Wheeler, Laine and Ehlers.

WEAKNESSES

After Josh Morrissey and Neal Pionk, the Jets are sorely lacking in talent on the blue line. At the heart of transaction rumors for several months, Patrik Laine could represent a distraction. Laurent Brossoit, the number 2 goaltender, finished the last with an average of 3.28 and a save rate of .895.

Calgary Flames

8es in the West

36-27-7, 79 points (, 564)

Head Coach

Geoff ward

General manager

Brad Treliving

Top scorers

  • Matthew Tkachuk : 61 points (23 dc, 38 d in 69 m)
  • Johnny Gaudreau : 58 points (18 dc, 40 d in 70 m)
  • Elias Lindholm : 54 points (29 dc, 25 d in 70 m)

Recruit to watch

Juuso Valimaki, defender

Main acquisitions

  • Jacob Markstrom, Guardian
  • Christopher Tanev, defender
  • Dominik Simon, winger

Main departures

  • Cam Talbot, Guardian
  • TJ Brodie, defender
  • Erik Gustafsson, defender

STRENGTHS

The Flames finally have a goaltender worthy of the number one title with Jacob Markstrom. Like his younger brother Brady, Matthew Tkachuk has a knack for making his rivals lose patience. He’s also very talented, not just an agitator. Two threatening first lines with the Tkachuk, Monahan, Gaudreau, Backlund, Lindholm and Mangiapane.

WEAKNESSES

Milan Lucic is no longer on the ice and he is a financial burden with his salary of 5.25 million. Acquiring Dominik Simon, Josh Leivo and Joakim Nordstrom will help, but there is still a lack of depth within the last two attacking lines. TJ Brodie has left Calgary and Mark Giordano is not getting any younger at 37. They no longer have the same luster on the blue line

Edmonton Oilers

A very competitive division

5es in the West

37-25-9, 83 points (. 585)

Head Coach

Dave tippett

General manager

Ken Holland

Top scorers

  • Leon draisaitl : 110 points (43 b, 67 p in 71 m)
  • Connor McDavid : 97 points (34 b, 63 p in 64 m)
  • Ryan nugent-hopkins : 61 points (22 dc, 39 d in 65 m)

Recruit to watch

Evan Bouchard, defender

Main acquisitions

  • Tyson Barrie, defenseman
  • Kyle Turris, center
  • Dominik Kahun, winger
  • Slater Koekkoek, defender

Main departures

  • Matt Benning, defender
  • Andreas Athanasiou, winger

STRENGTHS

Two Hart Trophy winners in Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid. Atop the NHL on power-play last year at 29.5%. Dave Tippett has finally set up a defensive structure for the Oilers.

WEAKNESSES

Mikko Koskinen and Mike Smith are one of the worst goaltending duos in the NHL. A team that relies too much on the shoulders of McDavid and Draisaitl. Already weak at the blue line, the Oilers will play without their number one defenseman, Oscar Klefbom.

Vancouver Canucks

A very competitive division

7es in the West

36-27-6, 78 points (. 565)

Head Coach

Travis Green

General manager

Jim benning

Top scorers

  • JT Miller : 72 points (27 dc, 45 d in 69 sts)
  • Elias pettersson : 66 points (27 dc, 39 d in 68 sts)
  • Bo Horvat : 53 points (22 dc, 31 d in 69 sts)

Recruit to watch

Olli Juolivi, defender

Main acquisitions

  • Braden Holtby, goalkeeper
  • Nate Schmidt, defender
  • Jayce Hawryluk, winger

Main departures

  • Jacob Markstrom, Guardian
  • Tyler Toffoli, winger
  • Christopher Tanev, defender

STRENGTHS

The Canucks have two top crosses with Bo Horvat and Elias Pettersson. Defenseman Quinn Hughes is only 21 years old, but he’s already a master at power-play and restarting the game. Great depth on offense with a mix of talented and surly players.

WEAKNESSES

Thatcher Demko is one of the good young goalies in the NHL, but the departure of Jacob Markstrom will leave a hole. After the top 4, Canucks defensemen are in doubt with Jordie Benn, Olli Juolevi and Brogan Rafferty. The Canucks were unable to shake off winger Loui Eriksson’s poor contract.
