400 volunteers for the Gardiole
#HERAULT – There were almost not enough bags to collect the waste on Saturday, October 5, 2024, for the big cleanup of the Gardiole massif, above Frontignan. Four hundred people responded to the call of Jérôme Caubel, a volunteer at the dromedary farm. “I was struck by all the waste that had been hidden by vegetation until then, explains the man who also takes care of the Refuge de la Gardiole, an association that looks after the homeless. So I launched an appeal on my Facebook.”And it snowballed. By the end of the morning, satisfaction was in order. In total, five tons of rubbish were collected, including 1.6 tons of glass. Another truck had to be called to take them back to the recycling centers.
Today's figure: 16
#HERAULT – Despite reduced staff numbers, due to reinforcements sent to the Olympic Games, security recorded almost all favorable figures in Hérault. “32% fewer violent robberies, 83% fewer acts of violence against people on public transport, 10% fewer burglaries, 10% fewer vehicle thefts”, says Prefect François-Xavier Lauch. But domestic violence is on the rise, +16%.
Le Monde Nouveau: an intense fifth edition!
#ENVIRONMENTTwo days of meetings, workshops, activities… The environmental transition forum Le Monde Nouveau, organized by Midi Libre on October 4 and 5 in Montpellier, encouraged debates, exchanges and awareness-raising around the patron Laurence Tubiana and the patron Christophe Cassou. An intense fifth edition, with growing success, which welcomed many schoolchildren, as well as associations, companies and communities mobilized to respond effectively to climate change. Dozens of solutions and initiatives shared with great energy. Looking forward to 2025!
Cévennes: a suspected wolf attack
#GARD –A calf was found dead in the Cévennes, in Sénéchas, on Thursday. The animal was emptied of its viscera and a hind leg was taken away by the attacker. The services of the French Office for Biodiversity dispatched two agents with the environmental police to carry out observations and take samples and try to determine the nature of the attack. Traces of blood were reported near the town hall and towards the Moulin-du-Roure path, a popular place for hikers and swimming enthusiasts, where wolf tracks have already been reported, on the banks of the Cèze. Several lone wolves have been identified in the territory extended to the Hautes-Cévennes, near Mont Lozère. Gérard Cébelieu, the calf's owner, said this is the second time one of his calves has died like this. What will the experts' report conclude? ? Stray dog, lone wolf rejected by the pack ? We will have to wait a month for an initial hypothesis, before the final report a few months later.
Violence at the naturist village
#CAP D'AGDE – After two adjournments, the case, known as the naturist village gatekeepers, came before the Béziers court on Friday. Four defendants, municipal employees, appeared for acts of violence, racist and homophobic remarks. On May 27, 2023, a 54-year-old man explained to the police that he had been called a “nigger” and a “faggot” at the entrance to the naturist village. He claimed to have been beaten many times. Thirty months in prison, six of which were suspended with probation, and a committal warrant were requested for the youngest (22 years old) of the defendants. For the three other defendants, aged 24 and 60, the Béziers prosecutor's office requested a sentence of fifteen months in prison, six of which were suspended with probation. Deliberated on October 25, 2024.
