“Accountability doesn't work”: FFR President Florian Grill to install stricter framework for French teams

After a summer tour in Argentina marked by several legal cases, a new, stricter framework will be put in place for the French teams between now and the next matches in November, announced the president of the French Rugby Federation (FFR) Florian Grill to AFP on Monday, October 7.

“The historical model that has existed for years, based on empowerment, accountability, does not work”, declared Florian Grill in an interview with AFP, with the announcement in the coming days “of a plan, in which there will be controls, and sanctions”.

“The framework was not clear and a form of flexible framework was even admitted. We are setting a clear framework that will then allow sanctions. “And we won't have a trembling hand,” he warned.
In July, two players from the French XV, Hugo Auradou and Oscar Jegou, both aged 21, were arrested and then charged with aggravated rape after a match against Argentina.

End of the “fourth and fifth halves”

The Mendoza prosecutor's office, where the investigation is being conducted, requested last Friday that the case be dismissed, which will be considered at a hearing set for 18 October. The two players returned to France at the beginning of September, with Auradou returning to the field with Pau on Saturday.

On the same night in July, France XV full-back Melvyn Jaminet posted a racist video on his social networks, for which he was given a 34-week suspension by the FFR.

Explaining that he “completely respects” the Argentine justice system and does not comment on the judicial aspect of the Jegou-Auradou case, Florian Grill said he wanted to end the “fourth and fifth halves” that preceded these two cases.

“There will be financial or sporting sanctions” for future excesses, announced the boss of French rugby who regretted in previous years "a form of acceptance of these excesses which could sometimes even be organized".

Redesign of the charter

"We cannot imagine that we do ultra-elaborate nutrition, personalized hydration by player, data galore, and that at the same time, we can, in the middle of a tour, do a fourth or fifth half-time", he explained.

The details of this plan, which includes in particular a revision of the international player charter, should be announced in the coming days.

"We cannot take all the positives of rugby, ask brands, partners to associate their image with our presumed values and not respect them", added Florian Grill.
