L'intellectuel réputé mondialement s'était installé à Montpellier, à côté de la place de la Canourgue plus particulièrement, en 2018. C'est notamment ici qu'il a fêté ses 100 ans, en compagnie de son ami Paco Ibañez.
He set up discreetly in 2018, next to Place de La Canourgue. Edgar Morin, world-renowned sociologist and philosopher, left the city just as simply, a few days ago. "In Montpellier, I found a form of conviviality in the pedestrian area where I live, a village spirit. The walls are not soiled by advertising, people walk quietly, conversations are easy. It was important, in the last years of my life, to find an atmosphere here that I loved" explained this native Parisian  ;at Midi Libre in 2021.

Edgard Morin also said he chose Montpellier for the sun, its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea but also the Cévennes. He was made an honorary citizen of the city in February 2019 by the then mayor Philippe Saurel. From Avignon to Toulouse via Larzac and the La Paillade district, the brilliant intellectual responded very willingly to numerous requests to discuss thought, his life, his vision of the contemporary world. Edgar Morin notably celebrated his hundredth birthday at the Opéra-Comédie in the company of one of his many friends, Paco Ibañez.
