Aggravated theft and fraud against people aged 77 to 100: one defendant in detention, the other under judicial supervision pending trial

Two young men aged 22 and 23 were presented before the criminal court on Friday April 12 for acts committed on April 9 in Montpellier, and previously in Toulon and the surrounding area. Their trial was postponed until July 10.
Elderly, even very elderly, and vulnerable people: these are the targets chosen by these two young people from Marseillais, aged 22 and 23, to commit thefts from homes and card scams stolen banks. Acts committed in Toulon and Sanary-sur-Mer in the Var, at the end of March, then in Montpellier, on April 9. The victims are aged between 77 and 100.
A victim locked in a closet
On March 29, in Toulon, the two defendants even locked one of their victims in a closet, which resulted in them being prosecuted for aggravated theft, but also for kidnapping. One of them must answer for legal repeat fraud following acts of the same nature committed in 2020. The file lists five victims, all women, as well as three banking establishments .
Thefts against a backdrop of debt
If one of the defendants requested a delay to be tried, the prosecutor Caroline Chambon requested, in the meantime, the placement of the two young men under arrest warrant. The representative of the public prosecutor particularly underlined the obvious risk of a repetition of the facts, the thefts having been committed against a background of debt. At the hearing, the two defendants expressed regret about their actions.
At the end of its deliberations, the court presided over by Fabrice Parisi ordered continued detention for the defendant with the longest criminal record. The second is placed under judicial control, with a ban on appearing in Hérault and Var. The trial has been adjourned until July 10.
