On Wednesday, August 22, the gardens of the banks of Terre en Partage welcomed the animals of the educational farm of Mille brins d'herbe for a family activity.

On Wednesday, August 21, the shared gardens of Lodève opened their doors to some very unusual guests: a ferret, guinea pigs, baby turtles, but also a rooster, a ram, a billy goat… These animals, coming straight from the educational farm Mille Brins d'herbe, were welcomed by the association Terre en Partage for an activity at a free price.

"The goal is to introduce young and old to different animal species on the farm, how they live and their usefulness in our daily lives, says Aline Tatto, a specialist educator and coordinator of the educational farm located at the Therapeutic and Educational Institute of Campestre. Enclosures have been set up and the facilitators accompany the children in their contact with the animals. For two hours, visitors become familiar with them and create a bond with them. She explains that she works a lot with males: “We also want to break down preconceptions about certain animals to produce a change in the way they look at them, like the goat or the rooster perceived as aggressive“.

Raising awareness of animal welfare

The Terre en Partage Association, which had appreciated the experience in 2023, invited the farm once again. It's also a way to attract new people: “A group of childminders came, but also dads I didn't know”, says Géraldine Gailland, the facilitator of the association's shared gardens, who has been working here for two years with Amélie Bodson, the coordinator.

Explanatory panels with photos are placed to provide knowledge about the species present. The children were also able to enjoy books, free games, and Montessori tables built by hand.

The farm raises awareness about animal welfare and pays particular attention to respecting animals: “These are our educational partners with whom we work. Our role, as a referent, allows us to put them at ease and thanks to this we can go far in working with them with our audiences”, explains Aline. Her activities involve various structures: nursing homes, people with disabilities, schools, daycare centers, prisons…

"Transmit knowledge, calm a fear or break a stereotype"

The coordinator likes to interact with families, discussing for example the place of certain species in societies according to cultures. “If for each person we have succeeded in transmitting knowledge, calming a fear or breaking a stereotype, that is the main thing” she said with a smile.

The Terre en partage association organizes other activities related to fauna and flora every week. Thursday, August 29, there will be a morning on observing the seasons to identify animal and plant species in order to help scientific research on climate change.
