The arrest of a man refusing to wear a mask at a Tim Hortons restaurant of Montreal, captured in a video widely shared on social networks, is “an isolated incident”, according to the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM).
“This is someone who, obviously, wanted to create an incident,” said André Durocher, a spokesperson for the SPVM.
The latter indicates that it was the only intervention of the police officers of this kind to be occurring Saturday, the day of the entry into force of the mask-wearing compulsory in enclosed public places.
“Therefore we speak of an incident is very isolated and a case that, obviously, seemed to be someone who, rightly, wanted to talk to him,” confirms Mr. Durocher.
The man is expected to face charges of obstructing a peace officer.
The spokesperson for the SPVM invite the merchants to call the police in similar cases where holdouts refuse to comply with the new directive on the wearing of the mask.
“The traders do not have physically tirailler with people who are recalcitrant. If the people refuse to comply, they only have to call the police,” he said.
André Durocher argues that the police are invited to give priority to awareness during interventions of this kind.
“The police, they are asked, when they occur in relation to the wearing of the mask, going in the awareness first, which works in 99.99% of cases”, he explains.
“But there are always people who want to make statements, “adds the spokesperson for the SPVM.
