Arrow, season 8 : this is the end, why the series is going to miss us

It is this Tuesday, January 28, the CW will broadcast the last episode of season 8 of Arrow, which will also be the last of the series. The end of a huge chapter in the Arrowverse that we breeze already the heart. Because yes, the series Stephen Amell is going to miss us.

It has changed the image of the super-heroes on tv

The least we can say is that Arrow has helped Polish the image of the super-heroes in the world series. The action scenes are stylish and badass, the atmosphere is dark and heavy, a main character in the morality ambiguous, a fascinating scene with its flashbacks… from his season 1, Arrow is woken up in the kind of the best of ways and we proved that it was possible to tell such stories in a different way. And if she is quickly made to steal the limelight by Daredevil on Netflix, which has surpassed in all areas, one cannot help but think that without it, the new wave series super-heroic would not have been the same.

In front of the characters forgotten

Another strong point of Arrow, it has allowed for the emergence of heroes/villains unknown by the general public and neglected by the film studios. This is the Green Arrow, of course, but also all of these characters are secondary, but still prominent in the comics as Deathstroke, Arsenal, Deadshot, the Atom, Katana… All of them have had the right to exist and remind us of their importance. Of course, not all of them have received the same treatment, but it was nice to see the series grow in order to expand its universe and not just purring. This was not always very adroit, but the key was elsewhere.

In this regard, it is not even talking about those characters who have experienced a fate identical via the spin-off The Flash , or the Legends of Tomorrow.

It has launched a real franchise

In speaking of these series, derived, it was also the big point of the Arrow, she gave birth to a real franchise : the Arrowverse. Through it, the series Stephen Amell has given its letters of nobility to the word “crossover”. Not only with episodes in the epic and memorable to the impressive scale, but also with plots that are simpler, more questions, who were always able to make and stabilize such a universe. The Arrowverse has simply managed to do what DC/WB have failed with the Justice League at the movies : to create a team legitimate and complementary over time. By enabling characters to interact more regularly, each issue was then a magnitude stronger with a sincere attachment to our relation to the hero.

A beautiful exploration of the mythology of DC

Of course, Arrow did not invent anything, Smallville was already doing in his time. Nevertheless, the exploration of the world of DC seemed to be at once more credible and better controlled here. Whether via winks discrete for which it was necessary to open the eyes, or direct references to important things (we all remember all of our reactions by finding the first mention of the well of Lazarus) – a recipe for recovery perfectly in the spin-off then, Arrow reminded us constantly of his ambition to be anything other than a simple series of super-hero locked in his universe.

A series of ambitious

“Ambition” is precisely the word that we will take the most thinking of Arrow. Once again, the series has not always been successful, and has even sometimes been overcome by his desires (special effects misfires, staged botched, directions sometimes strange, casting not always at the top…) but it had the merit of trying things. In his narrative, in the choreography of his fights, in the treatment of his characters, with changes sometimes bold, Arrow does was never. Sometimes it was tiring, using (and ironically repetitive, a format of 22 episodes it was maybe not the best idea), but we felt the urge behind and it was enough to drive us away.

This Tuesday, January 28, Arrow will stop and, yes, she’s going to miss us.
