The world’s oldest continuously-operating web camera will be turned off on August 30 after 25 years of continuous operation. Thus at the end of summer 2019 gadget would be a piece of history with the web camera was set at the dawn of the Internet, and goes to “retire” during its heyday.

What started as a student project at the state University of San Francisco in 1994, became part of the Internet: anyone who has a connection to the world wide web could keep an eye on the website FogCam behind the famous fog in the Bay of San Francisco, known to locals as Carl. However, the image transmitted is not real-time, and at a speed of 1 frame per 20 seconds.
“The Internet has changed a lot since 1994, but FogCam will always hold a special place in its history,” – said in Twitter, the creators of the project, Jeff Schwartz and Dan Wong.
In an interview with the newspaper San Francisco Chronicle Schwartz explained the decision to disable the Webcams, noting that in recent years support FogCam became more complex.

“It’s time to close the project. We no longer have a good overview or a place to install the camera, so the last time FogCam transmits the image of the courtyard of the State University of San Francisco is the Golden gate bridge. However, the University does not endorse our project, and we have to send the webcam on pension”, – explained the reason for the shutdown of the oldest webcam Jeff Schwartz.
Despite the fact that FogCam is the oldest operating webcam in the world, it is not the first. In 1991 at the University of Cambridge began its work, the Trojan Room camera. The students set it up to monitor the presence of coffee not to go to the kitchen once again. The project has received international acclaim, but in 2001 was closed, becoming one of the historical artifacts from the early era of the Internet.
