At Negpos in Nîmes, photographer Fatima Mazmouz showcases the magical power of women

Avec ses mises en scène, Fatima Mazmouz évoque les cultures “amazighs” et la puissance des femmes.

Une exposition à découvrir dans le cadre de la programmation associée de la Contemporaine de Nîmes au centre d'art et de photographie NegPos. 

A naked woman posing with a boar's head on her knees. The image of Fatima Mazmouz visible from outside the Negpos art and photo center sets the tone. The Franco-Moroccan artist is a free, emancipated woman, committed to the question of the female body.

With the exhibition "Sex and witchcraft", she sets herself on stage in search of traces of "Amazigh" cultures, traditions, spiritualities. , Berbers who existed in North Africa before the Islamic conquest and who resist despite the centuries.

Shamanic rituals

"She poses, takes herself as a subject in situations that are not expected from an Arab woman", explains Patrice Loubon, director of Negpos. Performing in shamanic rituals, evoking animist symbols, Fatima Mazmouz summons snakes, chicken feet, chameleons and plants for a variation that is both provocative and sensual around witchcraft and a tribute to the power of women guarantors of this know.In orange tones, like old prints tested by time, she puts her images at a distance by recomposing them with a strange frame where the pixels are transformed into small eyes. Eye of the photographer, protection against the evil eye, divine omniscience, incarnation of knowledge, painting that looks at us… The symbolism is rich. This strange surface also evokes moucharabieh or embroidery, reconstructing the image in a way that is both technological and pointillist, outside of time.
