Teachers at Claude-Chappe college, in Gallargues-le-Montueux, demonstrated against the reform "the clash of knowledge". Parents and elected officials supported the teachers in front of the school. The Claude-Chappe college brings together college students from Gallargues-le-Montueux, Aigues-Vives and Aimargues.

This Wednesday, June 5, teachers from the Claude-Chappe middle school demonstrated against “the sorting of students, for a school of success for all”, with parents, teachers and elected officials in front of the establishment located in Gallargues. The school brings together middle school students from Gallargues-le-Montueux, Aigues-Vives and Aimargues.

“This middle school welcomes 660 students while it is made for 600, specifies Laurence Barduca-Fauquet, municipal councilor of Gallargues and departmental councilor of Gard. Three hundred children from Aimargues arrive at the college after leaving CM2, from Aigues-Vives and Gallargues-le-Montueux."

Around a hundred parents were present at this event. From 11:30 a.m., at the gates of the college, at noon the students left the establishment with papers to place on their faces on which a sad emoji appeared. This reform called "The shock of knowledge to raise the level of school", by National Education, will reorganize mathematics and French courses into groups of flexible levels throughout of the college with reduced numbers of thirty students from the start of the 2024 school year, this will concern 6th and 5th grade students and in 2025 those in 4th and 3rd grade.

"Class cohesion impacted" for teachers

The certificate will be compulsory to access a general or professional second. A science teacher speaks: "We need more resources, one hour less of lessons for the 6th grade is too much, the level groups will inevitably have an impact on the class cohesion and on self-esteem and success, the days will be longer and the changes of teachers depending on the groups will necessarily make monitoring of the students complicated."

The elected officials present, including the mayor of Aigues-Vives, Jacky Rey and two municipal councilors as well as Henri Brin, regional councilor, said they supported parents and teachers in their efforts and are asking for additional resources for this reform.
