The American Bryson DeChambeau took the lead on Thursday April 12 at the 88th Masters at Augusta, one shot ahead of his compatriot and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, after a first lap marked by bad weather and interrupted by nightfall.

The start of the tournament, which is taking place in Georgia, has been delayed twice due to bad weather conditions, heavy rain and violent thunderstorms. DeChambeau, winner of the US Open in 2020 and player of the LIV, a parallel circuit created by Saudi Arabia, returned a card of 65, or seven shots under par, thanks in particular to eight birdies .

Behind him and Scheffler, the Dane Nicolai Hojgaard (-5), completes the leading trio of this first Major of the golf season. A total of 27 players, including legend Tiger Woods, must complete the first round on Friday before the second round begins immediately.

Pavon in the top 10

This is also the case for Frenchman Mathieu Pavon, who is currently in the top 10 for his first participation. Scottie Scheffler, who is therefore provisionally second (-6), is aiming for a second title after the one gleaned in 2022, and will try to become the second player in history after Woods to win the Masters twice as No.1 global. "Mission accomplished for today”, declared the American after his first round.

For his part, Woods will try to make the cut for the 24th time in a row, to surpass the record he co-holds with Fred Couples. Le Tigre, 48, is recovering from surgery on his right ankle last April and is still suffering from pain related to his major car accident in February 2021.

For the moment, he is one shot under par (17th), after 13 holes and declared on Thursday that his "body was fine".

McIlroy finally begins a Masters under par

Also favorite for the final victory, the Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy, who is aiming for the only Major missing from his record, returned a card of 71 (-1), his best record ever ;opening of a Masters since 2018. "I held on well, it’was a bit messy" commented on the world No.2 who spoke of "difficult conditions".

Indeed, after the delayed start of the festivities, strong winds disrupted this first round, making the course "extremely difficult" said for his part the Spaniard Jon Rahm, reigning champion, who returned a card of 73 and must now "catch up quickly".

If successful, the Spaniard can become the fourth player to win two consecutive Masters after Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Nick Faldo.
