Canada’s Steven Diez won his first qualifying match for the Australian Open on Sunday in Doha, Qatar.
The Ontarian defeated Alexey Vatutin of Russia in three sets of 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. The two tennis players had difficulty serving. Diez converted six of his 14 break points, but lost his serve on four occasions.
Diez, who claims the 177e echelon in the ATP standings, will face the Swiss Henri Laaksonen in the following round. The latter is the 15e seeded in qualifying.
On Monday, the Quebecer Eugenie Bouchard will make her debut in 2021, also in a qualifying meeting for the first Grand Slam of the year. She will face Australian Abbie Myers in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
