Bill Belichick refuses the Presidential Medal of Freedom

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has said he has turned down the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian decoration, due to the tragic events at Capitol Hill.

The ceremony was scheduled for Thursday, and the announcement was made on Sunday.

“Recently, I was offered the opportunity to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is flattering because of the respect that honor represents and the admiration I have for those who have received it. However, the tragic events of last week took place and I made the decision not to accept this decoration, ”said the 68-year-old man in a press release.

Recall that the Capitol was assaulted by rioters following controversial messages from President Donald Trump on social networks. Five people lost their lives.

Belichick, a six-time Super Bowl champion as a head coach, is a longtime friend of Trump. Without mentioning the president’s name, he condemned recent events, and recalled that 2020 had been a year of great discussions on social justice.

“Above all, I am an American citizen who has a great respect for the values, freedom and democracy of our nation. I know I also represent my family and the New England Patriots, ”added the coach.
