Botulism: Five people hospitalized in serious condition after eating canned pesto

Five people with symptoms suggestive of botulism were hospitalized in intensive care or resuscitation after consuming the same artisanal preserve in the Centre-Val-de-Loire. The ARS was alerted on September 9, 2024.

The five cases are suggestive of botulism. On September 9, the ARS of Centre-Val-de-Loire was notified of several possible botulism contaminations, reports BFMTV. The victims were hospitalized and the symptoms all suggest this rare but serious disease.

Five people concerned

The victims are in intensive care or intensive care. They consumed homemade preserves, a wild garlic pesto from the brand "Ô petitsoignons".

“The disease generally appears 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food and causes symptoms of varying severity,” the Directorate General of Health said in a press release (DGS). “Also, the occurrence of other cases in the coming days is not excluded”, fears the organization.

The disease causes different symptoms: “Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, lack of accommodation, blurred vision, choking, dry mouth accompanied by a lack of swallowing or even speech, more or less severe paralysis of the muscles.”

The canned goods analyzed

The canned goods in question were sent to the Pasteur Institute for analysis. The first results should be available within two days.

"Botulism is a serious neurological condition caused by a very powerful toxin that develops particularly in poorly preserved foods. In France, the majority of cases of botulism are linked to preserved foods that have not undergone a thorough sterilization process: salted meats, cold meats or even preserves of family or artisanal origin”, indicates the ministry's service.
