Box office: “Avatar 2” surpasses “Titanic” and becomes the 3rd biggest hit of all time

Two months after its theatrical release, the blockbuster Avatar: The Way of the Water has just surpassed< /strong>Titanic at the worldwide box office and is now the third highest-grossing film in cinema history, behind the first Avatar and Avengers: Endgame. 

Canadian filmmaker James Cameron can therefore boast of having achieved three of the four greatest box office successes in history. Launched with great fanfare in mid-December, its Avatar 2 continues to smash new records. By crossing last Sunday the milestone of 2.244 billion dollars at the box offices of the planet, the second part of the popular science fiction saga has just exceeded the 2.243 billion dollars amassed by Titanic, another film directed by Cameron 25 years ago. 

Released in 1997, Titanic initially grossed $2.194 billion at the box -office, but a reissue of the film in 3D, launched in early February, allowed it to increase its receipts to $2.243 billion. 

Up for four awards at the upcoming Academy Awards on March 12, Avatar: The Way of the Water is still riding high at the global box office, grossing over $7 million. $ in US theaters last weekend, according to Box-Office Mojo

It remains to be seen whether it will succeed in exceeding two titles which rank ahead of it on the list of the most lucrative films in history, namely the first Avatar(2.92 billion $), released in 2009, and the production of Marvel Avengers: Endgame ($2.79 billion), which hit theaters in 2019.
