Brésil: début des tests d’un vaccin chinois

SAO PAULO | A vaccine against the coronavirus developed by the chinese laboratory Sinovac Biotech must begin to be tested in Brazil Tuesday, with 900 professionals of the health volunteers in Sao Paulo, announced on Monday the local authorities.

In total, this vaccine will be injected to 9000 volunteers in six brazilian States, in the framework of phase 3, the last before the registration.

These tests are conducted by the Institute’s public reference Butantan, which must produce 120 million doses if the results are conclusive.

“We will be able to have in Brazil the first vaccine distributed massively (…). We are in the midst of the outbreak, with many cases, it is the ideal scenario to test a vaccine,” said Monday, at a press conference, Dimas Covas, director of the Institute Butantan.

Brazil is the second country most affected by the COVID-19, after the United States, with nearly 80 000 deaths and more than 2 million people become infected.

The volunteers will be monitored by doctors every two weeks and the first results are expected in three months.

Some 20,000 doses of the Coronavac arrived by plane Monday morning to Sao Paulo and will be distributed in 12 centers of research, in this State, the most populous country in the Brazil, but also those of Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, and the capital Brasilia.

Another vaccine whose development is one of the most advanced in the world, is already in phase 3 testing in Brazil since the end of June, the University of Oxford and the laboratoire AstraZeneca.

As for the project of Sinovac, a technology transfer agreement has been signed for Brazil to manufacture it locally.

This vaccine in the uk has presented encouraging results, generating a “strong immune response”, as well as another chinese project, the group CanSino Biologics, according to preliminary elements published on Monday by the british medical journal The Lancet.

Brazil is a land suitable for the testing of the vaccine because the pandemic is still expanding and the country has a globally acknowledged know-how in terms of immunization.
