The president of burundi, Pierre Nkurunziza, at the age of fifty years, died Monday as the result of a “cardiac arrest”, announced on Tuesday that the government of burundi in a press release on the letterhead of the presidency burundi.

“Despite support for intense, continuous and adapted, the medical team was not able to retrieve the patient “, adds the press release, stating that the multidisciplinary medical team tried for “several hours” to revive him.

Mr. Nkurunziza presided over the destinies of Burundi, one of the poorest countries of the planet, since 2005.

On 20 may, his successor, and dauphin designated, Evariste Ndayishimiye, was elected to replace him at the head of the State, Mr. Nkurunziza had decided not to stand. The term of office of Mr. Nkurunziza was scheduled to be completed in August.

His candidacy for a third term, very controversial in 2015 had plunged his country into a major political crisis which has left more than 1200 dead and forced 400 000 Burundians in exile.

The presidential election of 20 may was held despite the outbreak of new coronavirus: thousands of supporters had flocked to the meetings of the campaign and on election day, voters will be urged against each other in the queues, without any real measure of prevention.

It was unclear Tuesday if the cardiac arrest which has been unsuccessful, Mr. Nkurunziza is due to an infection in the COVID-19. The wife of Mr. Nkurunziza had recently been admitted to Nairobi for treatment, sources in Bujumbura stating that she had contracted the new coronavirus.

In its press release, the government announced a national mourning of seven days from Tuesday.
