CAN 2024: Ivorians disappointed after the “shipwreck” of the Elephants at home

Ivory Coast woke up on Tuesday with a hangover following the debacle of its national team, humiliated 4-0 at home by Equatorial Guinea during the World Cup. Africa of Nations, even if a hope of qualifying remains.

The Ivorian dailies were unanimous in their front pages on Tuesday morning: "Elephants, the shipwreck", headlined the daily Nouveau Réveil, "Why", added the Patriot, evoking a "debacle" while Inter spoke of a "Grande hu-mi-lia-tion".

In a “nightmare” match, by coach Jean-Louis Gasset's own admission, Ivory Coast sank against Equatorial Guinea on Monday evening and the threat of # 39;elimination in the first round looms for the Elephants.

A few scuffles broke out in the stadium at the end of the match, which were quickly contained. After the match, some disgruntled supporters damaged buses on the road leading from the Ebimpé stadium to the city of Abidjan, before a return to calm, dispersed with tear gas by the forces of the ;#39;order.

The Ivorian players, for their part, waited almost three hours after the final whistle, in their locker room, before returning to their hotel.

But if many fans were angry, or dejected, some still want to believe in a possible qualification.

"It's not over", dares the public daily Fraternité Matin.

Because with the almost miraculous draw conceded in the final moments Monday evening by Ghana against Mozambique (2-2), Ivory Coast has found reason to believe in a possible qualification.

She can still finish among the four best thirds, if the results of the other groups are favorable to her. A victory, for example, for Morocco over Zambia in Group F on Wednesday would be enough to allow the Elephants to continue the adventure.
