China: containment in emergency for eleven districts of Beijing

Beijing | Several tens of the residents in Beijing have tested positive to the new coronavirus, confirming the emergence of a new focus of contamination in the chinese capital, where a containment emergency was ordered in eleven districts.

These new cases have prompted fears of a resurgence of the epidemic in China, which had appeared in the last year the disease Covid-19, in the city of Wuhan (center), that the authorities had managed to control by strict quarantine measures.

The market Xinfadi, in the district of Fengtai, in the south of Beijing, was closed, after having been connected to the most contamination.

Seven cases of contamination to the Covid-19 have been identified in the vicinity of the market of meat, fish and vegetables, including six on Saturday, according to the health authorities.

But the other 45 cases, asymptomatic, were detected after testing Friday on about 2000 employees of the market, said an official of the health of Beijing, Pang Xinghuo.


A first case of Covid-19 at Beijing in two months was announced Thursday, a person who had gone to market, Xinfadi last week and had not left the city recently.

Among the six new cases announced Saturday included three employees of the market Xinfadi, a person who went there for his races and three employees of a research centre on meat, located seven kilometres from the market. One of them had gone to the market last week.

The market has been closed down by the authorities, and a seafood market which was made one of the infected persons, for disinfection operations and the collection of samples to be carried out.

Hundreds of police officers were seen by AFP reporters near the two markets.

Officials in the district of Fengtai announced on Saturday put in place a device “time of war” to confront this new wave of contaminations.

Saturday morning, volunteers were doing door-to-door in several districts of Beijing, asking that their interlocutors if they were recently returned to the market Xinfadi.

And the authorities have announced the organization’s next large-scale tests for any person who has been in “close contact” with the market Xinfadi since 30 may.

More salmon

Nine schools and kindergartens in the area have been closed.

On Friday, the Beijing authorities have postponed the return of the pupils in the primary schools of the city and have suspended all sporting events.

The visits in the chinese capital of groups from other provinces have been suspended on Saturday.

The president of the meat market Xinfadi was told to “Beijing News” that the virus had been detected on boards used to cut up the salmon imported.

In the aftermath, the health authorities have ordered an inspection at the scale of the city, on the fresh meat and frozen poultry, and fish, in supermarkets, warehouses and food services.

Major supermarket chains, including Wumart and Carrefour, have removed the salmon from their stalls in the night from Friday to Saturday in Beijing, while ensuring that the other products were not affected, according to the daily newspaper “Beijing Daily”.

Several restaurants of Beijing featured more salmon to their menu on Saturday, found journalists from AFP.
