China ordered the closure of the U.s. consulate in Chengdu

La Chine ordonne la fermeture du consulat des √Čtats-Unis √† Chengdu

China Friday ordered the closure of the U.s. consulate in the city of Chengdu (south-west), three days after Washington’s decision to close the consulate of China in Houston.

This decision constitutes “a legitimate response and necessary measures to be unreasonable in the United States”, stressed in a statement the chinese ministry of foreign Affairs.

The ministry has not specified the period within which the diplomatic representation is expected to close its doors. In the case of Houston, the administration Trump had been given only 72 hours to the chinese ambassador to pack up and leave.

In addition to their embassy in Beijing, the United States there are five consulates in mainland China (Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenyang, Chengdu, Wuhan), as well as in Hong Kong.

The mission of the city of Chengdu, opened in 1985, covers the whole of the south-west of China, including the Tibet autonomous region. According to its website, it has 200 employees, including 150 local status.

The american secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday that the consulate of China in Houston, was “a hub of espionage” chinese and “the theft of intellectual property” american”.

China’s public diplomacy has not specified either the period within which the consulate is expected to close its doors. In the case of Houston, the administration Trump gave 72 hours to the chinese ambassador to pack up and leave.

“The present situation of sino-us relations does not correspond to the wishes of China and the United States are fully responsible”, has denounced Beijing, calling on Washington to “create necessary conditions for bilateral relations to return to normal”.

Beijing had already announced reprisals against the closure of his consulate in the largest city in the Texas (south).

The voltage sino-american, already fuelled by the trade disputes and mutual accusations about the origin of the Covid-19, is up a notch in recent weeks with the imposition by Beijing of a law on national security to Hong Kong.

Washington has denounced a law that destroys the autonomy of the former british colony, and has taken measures of economic retaliation against the autonomous region of china. Beijing has denounced interference in its internal affairs.

“New tyranny”

Thus increasing the pressure, Mike Pompeo, on Thursday called on “the free world” to “triumph” of the “new tyranny” embodied, according to him, by the communist China.

“Today’s China is more and more authoritarian to the interior of the country, and more aggressive in its hostility to freedom everywhere”, he said in a speech whose tone reminded more than ever the cold War with the soviet Union.

In an attack of unusual virulence against the president of one of the world’s major powers, he also has accused Xi Jinping to be a “follower sincere of a failed totalitarian ideology”, making reference only to its duties of “general secretary” of the communist Party of china (CPC).

Sign of the mistrust surrounding the american police force suspects, in addition, a researcher of the chinese, accused of having concealed his links with the army to obtain a u.s. visa, is a refugee at the consulate chinese of San Francisco in order to escape arrest.
