Ce samedi 7 septembre, les combats de Bazeilles de 1870 ont été célébrés à Nîmes lors d’une cérémonie Place Duguesclin en présence des autorités militaires et d’élus.

History is written with memory. This is essentially the meaning of the commemorations that mark official agendas. Sometimes certain old dates seem very far away in history and yet the authorities and veterans' associations keep the memory on the agenda and the flame of memory alive. This Saturday, the battles of Bazeilles (Ardennes) were celebrated but above all the heroic resistance of the French soldiers against the soldiers of the Prussian army in 1870. At that time, Prussia invaded France and the French army was poorly organized. An army was hastily assembled to try to resist the occupier, particularly in the region of Sedan and Bazeilles. This city in the Ardennes will remain in history for the combativeness of the marine troops who demonstrated incredible courage and heroism. Even if they did not win the battle, their heroism has remained in the history books. This is why the marine troops are honored during the commemoration of the battles of Bazeilles which this Saturday morning gave rise to a laying of wreaths in the presence of several elected officials (Christian Bastide, Franck Proust or Yoann Gillet, or Monique Boissière). The faithful flag bearers, the veterans, were also present to carry the colors and no doubt also the hope of transmitting a form of memory.
