HONG KONG | hong Kong people will be required to wear the mask in public, starting on Wednesday, announced Monday the authorities with the unveiling of a battery of measures to cope with a new wave of cases of coronavirus.
“The situation of the epidemic is extremely serious in Hong Kong”, has declared to journalists the assistant to the head of the executive, Matthew Cheung, in announcing that the gatherings in public more than two would be banned, and that the restaurants would only be authorized for sale to take away.
Mr. Cheung has also pointed out that Beijing had agreed to help Hong Kong to build a field hospital to cope with the increasing number of cases.
The ex-british colony, very densely populated, was one of the first areas affected by the epidemic after its home chinese and has initially achieved remarkable results against the coronavirus.
But contaminations are bounced back a few weeks ago, which prompted the authorities to order new measures of social distancing.
More than a hundred cases were daily recorded these past five days, bringing the total contamination in the city of 7.5 million people, 2 600, for 19 deaths.
Hence the decision to strengthen further the measures.
The wearing of the mask — already widespread among the population — had become mandatory in public transport and in enclosed public places. Only the takeaway was allowed in restaurants in the evening.
“The central government has agreed to help us build a hospital that will have up to 2,000 beds,” said Mr. Cheung journalists.
