Coronavirus: new record of daily cases of infection in Australia

Coronavirus: nouveau record quotidien de cas de contamination en Australie

Australia reported on Thursday, of 723 new cases of coronavirus recorded in 24 hours only in the State of Victoria (South-East), is a new record of contamination, especially related to retirement homes.

This State of which Melbourne is the capital is the heart of the resurgence of the disease on the island-continent, whose initial response to the epidemic had been hailed.

That’s three weeks that several districts of Melbourne and its vicinity are subjected to a containment.

The authorities have, however, announced Thursday 723 new cases in 24 hours, and 13 deaths from the coronavirus in the single State of Victoria. The previous record of new cases, Monday, was much lower (+549) and focused on the whole of the territory.

The Premier of Victoria Daniel Andrews blamed, in part, this sharp increase to a surge of cases in the institutions for the elderly. Most of the people who died were 70 years or older.

The concern at the back of the COVID-19 starts to earn the rest of the country. Three new cases have been reported in the State of Queensland and several schools in Sydney have closed between Wednesday and Thursday, with some fearing that the largest city in australia is also about to switch back to a larger outbreak.

The State of New South Wales of which Sydney is the capital city reported 18 new cases Thursday, a similar figure to the previous days.

While the vast island-continent was quite able to master before the outbreak, Melbourne has experienced since mid-June, a resurgence of cases. This new wave has been attributed to breaches of the rules in the hotels where travellers returning from abroad were on their forties.

Australia has 25 million people, has registered more than 16 000 cases of coronavirus and 189 deaths.
