OTTAWA | The federal mps will meet at the call of the liberals, Monday, to discuss a draft law aiming to unlock new measures of support in the face of the COVID-19 which should be adopted with the support of the Bloc québécois.
The liberal leader in the House of commons, Pablo Rodriguez, asked the representatives of the different political parties are recalled to the lower house on Monday to vote on a series of measures that will expand the wage subsidy program for businesses and help people with disabilities.
“Canadians continue to face an unprecedented crisis, because of which the federal government must quickly take new measures to ensure that they receive the emergency financial assistance they need,” argued Mr. Rodriguez in a letter sent to the president of the Chamber, and shared on his Twitter account.
The minister of Finance, Bill Morneau, had announced last Friday that the wage subsidy program will be extended to companies that have experienced revenue losses of less than 30 % because of the COVID-19. This program will also be extended until December. A single payment of $ 600 non-refundable has also been proposed to help Canadians to cope with a disability.
The Trudeau government is already assured of passing its legislation through the support of the Bloc québécois.
“The government has signalled its intention to re-file a bill that would help the people in situation of disability, which would expand the wage subsidies for businesses, including seasonal industries, and that would extend certain deadlines for justice. It is essentially a question of the measures that the Bloc québécois has solicited or supported in the past,” said the parliamentary leader of the Bloc, Alain Therrien, announcing that his party will support the liberals, despite his reservations.
In particular, the training sovereigntist would have liked that larger patients can now benefit from weeks of employment insurance by up to 50, up from 15 currently.
“The Bloc Québécois will not reject measures that are good for Quebec because they could have been better. It would therefore be in favour of this bill and believes that it is now time to put these measures in place,” expressed Mr. Therrien.
