Anthony Fauci, the highest expert in infectious diseases of the u.s. government, has reiterated that the United States, despite the denial of president Donald Trump, saw the pandemic of COVID-19 worsen, for lack of a coherent strategy against the virus.
Some parts of the country, like New York, “have taken control of things,” said Anthony Fauci at the site FiveThirtyEight on Thursday.
“But as a country, when we compare ourselves to other countries, I don’t think we can say that we’d come out of it well. This is simply not the case”, he warned.
The immunologist sounds the alarm for days in interviews in the face of the explosion in the number of new cases in the Southern and Western United States. The country has again beaten a record on Thursday with 65,000 cases detected in 24 hours — on the order of two times more than the peaks of spring, when the epicenter was New York.
On Wednesday, dr. Fauci was felt that some States had gone “too fast” in the déconfinement, and that a new containment may be necessary, in a podcast of the Wall Street Journal.
And Thursday, in an online conference, it was regretted that some States in the South have not followed the instructions of re-opening gradual and have “skipped steps”.
Last week, he warned, after the comforting words of the vice-chairman, Mike Pence, the United States is heading right towards the bar 100 000 new cases per day (on this day, the balance sheet daily was approximately 40 000 cases).
His warnings are echoed in more and more criticisms about the politicization of the epidemic. “It is necessary to formulate the hypothesis that without the divisions that are ours, and we would have a more coordinated approach”, he says at FiveThirtyEight.
It is an understatement: the containment -just like the déconfinement is uncoordinated, state-by-State, with those governed by republicans, in general, more prone to lifting the restrictions. At the federal level, the White House had issued instructions for a progressive reopening of the economy, with criteria of decrease in the number of cases and increase detection capacity.
But very few States have met these criteria, Donald Trump himself was urging to accelerate the déconfinement, and dr. Fauci awards today clearly the current outbreak to a déconfinement precipitate and recklessness with which the South Americans resumed their activities without complying with the gestures barriers.
Donald Trump minimizes, to him, the daily records: “For the hundredth time, the reason why we have so many cases, compared to other countries, which are not better than us and by far, is that we test a lot better,” he tweeted. This is false, because the rate of increase of the contagion is much greater than the rate of increase of the tests, according to the official data.
