Created in Agde in 2017, the Ecomatelas company is revolutionizing the reconditioned bedding market

The start-up created in Agde has developed an innovative and ecological process to bring hotel mattresses back to life. She plans  ambitious developments for 2024.

Ecomatelas was born from the ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit of Jérémie Adjedj. During his studies, he worked in the summer in his uncle's bedding company in Agde: he delivered new mattresses to hotels in the region and collected those intended to be thrown away.

"These mattresses, used for only two to four years, still had significant potential for use", explains Agathois. "I had the trigger in 2016 when the concept of reconditioned phones was starting to get people talking."

A virtuous approach

Jérémie Adjedj then thought about developing this model in order to be able to give a second life to the mattresses. This was followed by more than a year of research and development to result in a unique thermal disinfection and reconditioning process.

Since its launch in Agde in 2017, the Hérault-based company has grown significantly. It has given a second life to more than 30,000 mattresses and thus avoided the emission of more than 11,000 tons of CO2. This revaluation approach optimally contributes to the obligations of the Agec law (anti-waste and circular economy). "We provide an ecological and responsible alternative to traditional, energy-intensive recycling, while significantly reducing waste from the bedding sector."

2023, a year of growth

Another value advocated by Ecomatelas: quality of sleep. "Sleep problems are a public health issue. Our mattresses are not only ecological and economical. They are also designed to improve sleep quality. The best proof is that half of our sales are made thanks to word of mouth and reviews from our customers on this subject! ", smiles Jérémie Adjedj.

Last year, with more than 6,000 reconditioned mattresses sold, Ecomatelas recorded a 50% growth in its turnover – growth driven by the changing behavior of the French who are increasingly turning towards responsible consumption. At the same time, the company was bought, in February 2023, by Recyc’Matelas Europe, a major player in traditional mattress recycling in France. "This acquisition now allows us to access an additional source of mattresses and further consolidate our circular economy approach."

Nearly 3 million € of turnover projected in 2024

For 2024, Ecomatelas is targeting a turnover of 2.9 million euros; and plans to increase its sales by 50%. In terms of product innovation, the company is currently developing a 100% reconditioned pocket spring mattress. "This is a first in France! This will respond to strong demand from the French, and will also allow us to go further in our initiative to revalue mattresses."

And to support its ambitions, Ecomatelas plans to recruit six new employees in Montpellier, where the company has now been established since 2019, as well as in Paris, as part of the ;opening of its second store, planned for April. "We are convinced that innovation and eco-responsibility are the keys to sustainable growth. Our objectives are in line with the DNA of Ecomatelas, which is based on customer comfort and protection of the planet."

Ecomatelas in a few dates

2017: creation of the company in Agde.
2019: obtaining ESS (Social and Solidarity Enterprise) status, moving the production site and opening the first store in Saint-Aunès.
2022: certification and patenting of Ecomatelas reconditioning technology. 2023: acquisition by Recyc’Matelas Europe.
