Cyberpunk 2077: “a masterpiece” of video games, riddled with bugs

After successive postponements, the highly anticipated dystopian Cyberpunk 2077 video game produced by Polish studio CD Projekt RED is officially released worldwide on Thursday with a promotion campaign worthy of a Hollywood movie.

“Universally acclaimed” by critics, according to the site metacritic.com, Cyberpunk “brings open-world gaming to a new generation” for The Digital Fix, while Gameblog.fr evokes “a masterpiece”.

All in unison, however, the critics point to an impressive number of bugs, some even going so far as to suggest that the purchase of the game be postponed for several months until the fixes arrive.

According to some media, Cyberpunk 2077 pushes very far the limits of what is technically possible today, and of what has already been proposed, on a lesser scale, in other games released recently, without however representing a real revolution.

Statements that may cringe at CD Projekt RED HQ in Warsaw, which has pushed back the game’s launch twice to refine details.

Because, the Polish studio to which we owe “The Witcher, Wild Hunt” released in 2015 and considered one of the best games of recent years, has done everything to seduce players.

18 different languages

According to estimates by the Polish bank BOS, the budget for Cyberpunk 2077, based on a role-playing game imagined by the American Mike Pondsmith, is estimated at 1.2 billion zlotys (270 million euros), which would make Cyberpunk 2077 one of the most expensive video games in history.

To put the odds on its side, the studio also won over one of the most highly rated actors, the American Keanu Reeves, known for his roles in “The Matrix” or “John Wick”.

In the game, which is released in 18 different languages, including 10 dubbed versions, he lends his face to one of the main characters, Johnny Silverhand.

The advertising campaign, estimated at tens of thousands of euros and launched in 55 countries and in 34 languages ​​is comparable to “that of a good film”, told AFP the boss and co-founder of the studio, Marcin Iwinski.

The main hero of the game, “V”, a stylish leather jacket and pistol in hand, is displayed on buses in Warsaw or London as well as on giant screens in Times Square in New York.

But it is above all the size of the game which takes place in a dystopian city, Night City, plagued by crime, where sex and cybernetic implants play a major role, which are highlighted by the Polish studio.

“Most fascinating city”

“We offer a new quality in terms of the player’s immersion in the story, his interaction with other characters, the dialogues, the way of moving” in Night City, underlines Marcin Iwinski.

“The game is huge. In its English version, it has 450 hours of dialogue, with more than 125 actors. You can spend many hours there because the game is not linear, ”he adds.

“The size and scope of Night City are absolutely stunning” confirms the specialist site IGN France, stressing that the game offered the player “an absolutely astonishing level of control”.

For IGN Japan, “Cyberpunk 2077’s greatest achievement is Night City, the most fascinating city in video game history to date.”

For Marcin Iwinski, Cyberpunk is “a vision of imaginable reality”. “Today we already have implants, not as sophisticated as in our game. Cyberpunk is an extrapolation of the future. We will see if it will look like it ”.
