Cycle paths in Agde: discover the municipality’s projects

Entre le centre historique et le Grau, les vélos sont de plus en plus nombreux sur la piste cyclable. D.R.

Connections between districts, junctions with public facilities, greenways on major roads… the City, which now has a 55 km network, is continuing its efforts.

We are not yet at the level of the Landes coast or the Arcachon basin, flagship destinations for cycling enthusiasts who benefit from hundreds of kilometers of cycle paths, but the efforts of the Agde municipality in terms of creating greenways are starting to bear fruit.

Making the historic center a priority

With 55 km of groomed trails, Agathois and holidaymakers have the means to indulge in one of their favourite pleasures: crisscrossing the city on two wheels… and in safety. “Inserting the bicycle into the heart of the city was one of our priorities””explains municipal councillor Laurence Mabelly, responsible for soft mobility issues.

Other development areas have also been under construction for several years, such as the maintenance of major roads and access to various public and private facilities (schools, commercial areas, tourist facilities), the deployment of the network of greenways in the historic center, towards land-sea connections or even walks along the seafront, without forgetting the establishment of interconnections with neighboring municipalities (read elsewhere). Investments that meet the expectations of residents and tourists of course, the democratization of electric bikes having created an undeniable windfall effect.

Safety at the heart of the thinking

Of course, not everything is perfect and it is not uncommon to see criticism flourish (narrowness of certain roads, degraded surfaces, etc.) on social networks. Remarks that of course do not escape the town hall. "Efforts have been made to secure intersections, widen the Saint-Christ trail along the Hérault, and create crossing platforms on Avenue du Littoral and Avenue de la Butte", says Laurence Mabelly, who also highlights “the installation of bicycle parking in the different districts of the city.”

Projects in the pipeline

As for projects, the City announces that it has several in the pipeline. “With the construction of the future multimodal interchange hub, we are planning a requalification of the link between the station and the city center, in connection with the footbridge over the Hérault, which will connect the city center to the park of the Château Laurens”, recalls the elected official. Which also announces the creation of a 1.2 km soft path on the avenue de Saint-Vincent, the end of the redevelopment of the road from Agenouillade to the Chemin du Sucre, as well as the requalification of the path from Notre-Dame to Saint-Martin, soon to be equipped with a soft path. “We are also working with the Department on the rehabilitation of the banks of the Canal du Midi, to develop cycle paths there”, continues Laurence Mabelly, a sign that users have many expectations in this area. As proof of this, we can take the planned development of a cycle path at Cap d'Agde, which would make it possible to reach the Old Port and thus further extend the coverage of a town which, let us remember, has as many kilometres of roads as the city of Montpellier!
