An accident involving a Lamborghini cost the life of a cyclist in Avignon. The investigation, still ongoing, will have to clarify the exact circumstances of the tragedy, which occurred this Sunday. A look back at the facts and the gray areas that remain.

Last Sunday, around 1 p.m., a tragic accident shook Avignon. On the acceleration lane of the Rocade, in the direction of Carpentras Avignon, a 51-year-old cyclist was fatally mowed down by a speeding Lamborghini. After the impact, the driver and his passenger, aged 25 and 16 respectively, fled on foot, abandoning the luxury car at the scene. They surrendered to the police later in the afternoon.

The indictment of the occupants of the Lamborghini

After their police custody, the two occupants of the vehicle were charged according to La Provence. The driver, who did not have a driving license, his having been suspended following a previous offense, is being prosecuted for involuntary manslaughter with two aggravating circumstances: hit and run and driving despite the suspension of his license. Known to the police for drug-related offenses, he was imprisoned. His 16-year-old sister, who was at his side during the accident, is facing charges of failure to assist a person in danger.

Who was the victim ?

The victim, a 51-year-old man, was a regional agent employed at the Mistral high school in Avignon. His death has deeply affected the educational community. Renaud Muselier, president of the region, expressed his emotion on the X network, paying tribute to a man "known and appreciated by students and his colleagues". His devastated family has launched an online fundraising campaign, which has already reached nearly €5,000 yesterday.

The scourge of illegal luxury car rentals

Several questions remain: how could a 25-year-old man, who had no driving license, have rented such a prestigious sports car?? Was he under the influence of illicit substances at the time of the accident?? Toxicological analyses are underway to shed light on this point.

The Lamborghini involved in the accident had a German license plate according to our colleagues. The investigation will attempt to confirm whether it was part of this illegal circuit. This type of rental, often based on cash payments, escapes any official control. A garage owner in the region, specializing in the sale of prestige cars, deplores this phenomenon: “It is obvious that these cars do not come from authorized dealers. They are irresponsible people who ignore the laws, safety rules, and who drive at full speed”.
