Dam destroyed in Ukraine: five dead in territories occupied by Moscow

UPGRADE DAY

Five people drowned after the destruction of the Kakhovka dam in Kherson, a region in southern Ukraine partially occupied by Russia, Russian news agencies reported Thursday citing local authorities.

“Five people who were herding the cattle died by drowning,” Vladimir Leontiev, the mayor of the Russian-installed town of Nova Kakhovka, was quoted by Russian agencies as saying.< /p>

About 40 people have been hospitalized, according to the agencies.

Nova Kakhovka is located near this dam, the destruction of which on Tuesday caused thousands to be evacuated from flooded areas in both in the territories controlled by Russia and Ukraine.

Moscow and Kyiv blame each other for this destruction, which raises fears of a humanitarian and ecological catastrophe.
