The day of memory and reconciliation: the history of the holiday
The day of memory and reconciliation set in honor of the momentous events of 8 may 1945, which in Europe was the date of the final victory over Nazism in the Second world war. “Unconditional surrender” of the armed forces of Nazi Germany was signed by the allies on may 8 at 23:01 in Berlin (or may 9 by Moscow time).
Even in this day in the cities of the winners began a massive celebration. A large-scale celebration of victory in the fight against Nazi Germany was held in Moscow on red square may 9, 1945, the day when the instrument of surrender was delivered to Stalin. Therefore, in all the republics of the Soviet Union the Victory was erected on may 9.
In 2004, for the 60th anniversary celebrations of Victory in world war II by the UN General Assembly adopted a Resolution 59/26 on the establishment of Days of remembrance and reconciliation on 8 and 9 may in honor of the heroes who gave their lives in the fight against Nazi Germany in 1939-1945 All the countries included in the UN were invited in one or both of these days to hold commemorative events and honor the victims of the Second world war.
Memorable date of may 8 was introduced in Ukraine in 2015. It was then that the Verkhovna Rada declared may 8 a Day of remembrance and reconciliation to honor all victims of the Second world war, thus fulfilling the recommendations of the United Nations. The Decree of the President of Petro Poroshenko said this memorable day is set for a “worthy celebration of the heroism of the Ukrainian people, his outstanding contribution to the victory of anti-Hitler coalition in world war II and showing respect to all the fighters against Nazism”.
The symbol of the Day of memory and reconciliation in Ukraine became the slogan “Nikoli znovu” and the image of the red poppy is an international mark of remembrance of the victims of war and civil conflict.
