Deadly earthquakes: outpouring of generosity from Syrians and Turks in Quebec
|MISE & Agrave; DAY
The Turkish and Syrian communities in Quebec are sparing no effort to send money and material goods to the areas affected by the deadly earthquakes of February 6.
In the past few days, the community centers of Greater Montreal have appealed to the generosity of the public to send material goods to the site.
Mission accomplished: collecting donations from the Turkish Community Center of Montreal was successful, since four planes filled with essential goods were sent to the site.
The victims of the earthquakes in Syria can also count on the support of Syrians in Quebec, in particular volunteers from the Syriac Cathedral Saint Ephrem, in Laval.
Meeted by TVA Nouvelles, members of the Syrian community say they are “proud” of the outpouring of generosity.
“I am proud to be able to contribute and I hope that our actions will help the people there”, testified a man.
“It is maximum generosity. I really like it,” added another lady.
“I think the government needs to come up with a law that can help welcome them as soon as possible. They no longer have a home and do not have the means to live”, recalled Father Elie Yachouh.
The Red Cross mobilized
The charity's volunteers continue their efforts to collect donations for the victims who greatly need it.
Since the tragedy, $19.1 million has been raised, in addition to aid financial contribution of $10 million from the federal government.
